It is very difficult for a small team to photograph all misericords in Britain, to catalogue and to describe them. So we rely heavily on your help. If you have a camera and enjoy photography you would help us greatly if you would pop in to your local church and photograph the misericords there. You can then send your images to Luuk Houwen. Make sure to give us your name so we can credit you properly as the creator of the image(s). See below for a list of churches with misericords that still need to be done.
General guidelines for photographing misericords:
- state where the pictures are taken: County, City, name of the church, where in the church the misericords are to be found (choir, chancel, nave, etc)
- use a numbering system to state clearly where the misericord appears in connection to the others. This database uses NSfW (North Side from West) followed by a number (even if there are returned stalls), so NSFW1 is the first misericord of the stalls on the north side starting from the west and SSFW12 is the twelfth misericord of the stalls on the south side starting from the west.
- provide, if you can, a few overview pictures of the stalls and the church interior
- provide a picture of the exterior of the church. This will become the main picture under which users will find the misericords
- if you can add GPS tags to the images, please do so (this is done automatically if you use a smartphone)
- if you can, provide more than one image of a misericord. Photographing a misericord from different angles (from below, from the side) can bring to light details that cannot otherwise be seen.
